Pigeon Religion

Pigeon Religion plays songs that are the aural equivalent of a demented wrong-turn mescaline trip, something akin to a wastoid blow-job in the bathroom of a bad hippy party with Jefferson Airplane playing at 15rpms on a broken turntable in the background. Sickly and hopelessly noisy, churning feedback laden guitars recall nights of miserable, unprotected sex and getting your ass beat by punk rockers only a quarter your age.

Love Potion - Ejaculator 7" [2009]

from LOW CUT

"Remember that early 90s notorious HK goreflick where an Ebola-infected Anthony Wong goes on a deranged killing spree? Well, that's sorta the image I was left with after listening to these 8 brutal tracks. Over-the-top aggressive speedy hardcore that sets new standards for the K-town scene, can't really remember when I experienced such a sickass explosion of desperate energy. The very best of 80's Boston and Japanese hardcore seem to be channelled through Love Potion like a succubus with an unhealthy deathwish."

Night Fever - New Blood 12" [2009]

from LOW CUT

"THIS IS COPENHAGEN, MAAAAAN!!! Yup, notorious k-townsters Night Fever have finally released their debut 12" after spreading havoc for some time. Muscular, pissed off, confident, defiant and macho-esque hardcore to the nines. Think early 80s Boston HC fornicating with Zero Boys, Poison Idea and Void. In fact first time I've heard this I was thinking of a more cockrock-ish and slickly produced Void. The 8 tracks possess aggression, speed and melody, amazing guitar shredding from Matthias, and Salomon's impressive voice that Danzig would kill for."

from GRAVE MISTAKE RECORDS:

Brand new 7" From Sweden's NITAD. On this platter they have 4 great tracks of their awesome brand of Swedish Meets US Hardcore punk. I really think this is definetly their best stuff to date. Best songwriting, best recording, best art, just all around perfect. The songs are catchy but just so powerful and in your face, it's rediculous. Incredible bass lines, Incredible guitar leads, pummeling drums and furious but well sung vocals all round this record out very well.

The Test Patterns - Blackout 12" [2009]

from TIC TAC TOTALLY!

"Rapid-fire power-pop-punk from Pittsburgh fusing Rip-Off-era sounds, late 70's punk and hardcore with some bubblegum goop to stick it on your brain. Think early Registrators, Teengenerate, Raspberries, Nerves, Big Star, Teenage Head, Nikki and the Corvettes etc. People who can write songs, and play em too. Dan (Radiobeats, Rot Shit) and Yago (Gito Gito Hustler) split male/female vocals while servin up dual guitar layers adding up to more sharp little candy fragments than this lollipop I busted on your head. Solid bass & drums tie it all up in a focused, aggressive sound under the pop coat. Comes with a poster and insert."

White Wires - Girly Girly Girly [2008]

from TERMINAL BOREDOM:

Some of their song titles (“Girly Girly Girly,” “Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah,” “Ha Ha Holiday”) may indicate their priorities in blatantly pop-infused ‘60s-garage-meets-‘90s-budget-rock, and their plastic shades n’ Converses definitely don’t dig ‘em out of that ditch, but God damn do they know how to write a catchy song. And they don’t bog it down with anything unnecessary, which I think is the key. Completely pop-infused numbers that have this great jangle to them – just the right amount of bass, treble and assertive drumming in the production, birthing some of the most infectious head waggers of recent memory. I guess I’m patting their backs a tad harder than I should be, but it’s fucking refreshing to see such reverence for songwriting in an age of aura being atop the pedestal. Good songs, good sound, good record.

Tommy Jay - Tommy Jay's Tall Tales of Trauma [Reissue, 2008]

from DUSTED MAGAZINE:

Strong outsider vibes douse this potent, out-of-nowhere reissue of a decade's worth of recordings by Ohio's Tommy Jay. All but lost to the margins when the burgeoning interest in Columbus punk/rock dried up in the late '90s, this edition (issued as a cassette in the mid-80s to hardly anyone) benefits from a reawakened curiosity in such sounds, these songs having ripened from as early as '74. Grafting a personal vision onto already-worthy VU/Roky/Mayo Thompson booze-n-pills lit school ambiance, with absolutely nothing to lose, here is the sound of an old human spirit taking flight. Stacks up to any comparable singer-songwriter release from the past few years and blows it right down.

Factums - Flowers [2009]

from SACRED BONES:

Flowers is the latest full length from Seattle’s bleak and ominous Factums and is their second for the Sacred Bones label. Recorded between 2006 and 2007 but only now seeing a proper release, Flowers is dark and disturbing. The album has twenty two tracks that fluctuate from sound collage to soundtrack-esque moments as well as more structured songwriting. This album also has flashes of abrasive electropunk that has garnered them well-deserved comparisons to Chrome, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and much of the early Wax Trax catalog.

Art Phag - Art Phag [1988]

Spewing forth from an industrial swamp south of Detroit in the mid-1980s, Art Phag cut a raw-boned, stripped down, gut poundin’, dead raisin’, hot damn I’m on fire and I’m takin’ you fuckers with me to hell path of destruction through the Motor City music scene for nearly a decade before flamin’ out like Russian space junk fallin’ from heaven on a starry starry night. Co-founded by Detroit’s legendary surf-rock-a-billy guitar lord and mad scientist, Len Puch and heavily medicated, sometimes lucid, mostly liquored, crazed songwriter, Vegas Razz, Art Phag combined a heavy, swampy, bluesy wall of thick thick mud with a bazooka directness. Heavily influenced by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, The Cramps and a steady dose of voodoo beats from the other side, Art Phag blasted a sonic grunginess long before kids were rippin’ their jeans in Seattle AND doing it all with only a greased up guitar, jungle pounding drums and other-worldly
vocals.

Flight - Flowers 7" [2009]

from AGIT READER

"Flight could be four, but is likely just one dude, “dreaming of” his own death, somewhere in the same cloud of pinkish purple smoke from which appeared Ariel Pink and Blank Dogs. I’d like to think that “Flowers” and it’s equally bewildering B-side “Johnny’s Mixed Up” is an attempt at seriously no-fi stadium stoner metal. It’s got such a sinister edge, such a plodding but sharp march to it, enlivened by a genuinely catchy anthem (that’s where the Wavves comparison feels apt). It’s not metal of course, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find pics of him chilling in his cave, tearing up the Bible to achieve his incredible levitation between the dark arts and the indie rock universe."

V-3 - Photograph Burns [1996]

from AMG:

Mistakenly categorized as lo-fi, underground legend Jim Shepard and his mid-'90s outfit V-3 should really be termed lo-pro (for low production), as the many mumbling, sometimes droning lo-fi bands of the mid-'90s have little artistically in common with Shepard's offbeat, organic rock. However, at a period when bands like Pavement and Guided by Voices were releasing records that practically shimmer by comparison, the production value of Photograph Burns is stunningly low for an indie, much less major-label, release.

GG King "Last of the Night Wiggers" Demo CS [2009]

from TERMINAL BOREDOM

"Essentially the last Carbonas line-up minus Dave on drums and switching instruments a bit. Six "ruff" demo tracks, and they're all really good (well...except the cover of "The Letter"...), definitely a decent couple of singles here. "Babbling Voices" and "Head in the Clouds" touch some slower and sleazier punk moments than the Carbonas did, "Drug Zoo" is right up there with any of their catchiest cuts, "Flowing Robes" is practically a crossover song (I'm talking about the metal/hc crossover you idiots...) and "Witching Hour" is catchy garage-trash. I felt really bad about the Carbonas bust-up, but I feel a whole lot better knowing GG is down there in ATL still carrying the torch."

Meth Teeth - Everything Went Wrong [2009]

from DUSTED

"Meth Teeth, out of Portland, lashes the no-hope drone of dead-end blues to turbulent punk rock distortion. Beginning as the one-man folk project of Mattey Hubele, the band picked up steam when Kyle Raquipiso joined, suggesting that Hubele blow out his songs with Pussy Galore-ish distortion. Now with the band’s first full-length, only a trace of the folk remains, haunting the margins of “I Was Wrong” and the instrumental “My Heart’s Heart.” Maybe the strongest whiff of Hubele’s strummer past comes in the bombed-out desolation of the verses here, blistered over with noise, shot through with intermittent rays of pop, jostled by sticks-on-rims and tambourine rhythms and slapped sober, occasionally, by giant guitar riffs. Like Eat Skull, Meth Teeth wraps fragmented bits of pop in a mesh of obstacles – cavernous distortion, buried leads and undecipherable lyrics."

Baseball Furies - Throw Them To The Lions [2009]

from SPIRAL SCRATH

"As the Baseball Furies were parting ways, they went into Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio, under the guidance of Bob Weston, and recorded what would be their final album, Throw Them To The Lions. The album would be the final point in their evolution as a wild and raw garage punk band to a great, honest rock and roll band without sacrificing any of the energy or desperation of their earliest days. Their influences became apparent and they now had the confidence to quiet things down and showcase their talents as great songwriters who can effortlessly throw in a catchy hook without forgetting the rage that initially provoked them into dedicating their lives to rock and roll."
