No Problem - And Now This [2011]

Oh, hi! 2011. has been really productive hasn't it? The blog's been busy as ever and we've posted shitload of great punk bands, right? Right. Sorry for such a slow year but I guess that's how it is on the allmighty internet. You just get bored too easy. But fear not, TEENAGE LOBOTOMY is not dead! Since the end of the year is closing in I've decided to post some of my favorite records of 2011. and the record to kick it all off is AND NOW THIS by the ALBERTA, CANADA based NO PROBLEM. I guess this is my favorite record in 2011. Great hardcore punk with lots of melodic hooks similar to the sound of THE OBSERVERS or even THE ADOLESCENTS. I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

Out on DERANGED RECORDS.

As we speak these guys recorded a couple of new gems and are looking for a label to release it so if you're interested get in touch with 'em. Brat Pack - Stupidity Returns LP [2011]

Brat Pack hail from Holland, but their sound is more reminiscent of the sunny streets, beaches, skate parks and pools of early eighties California. Influences vary from the aggressive sounds of RKL, SNFU, 7 Seconds and even some later era Poison Idea to a more melodic and gloomy approach of the Adolescents, D.I. and Agent Orange, played skilfully, but still really raw and pissed. Also, one song features the wicked Solomon of Night Fever fame on vocals. All in all, an energetic and melodic hardcore punk assault. And yeah, if you didn't know, Brat Pack members are also involved in almighty Citizens Patrol. This one is available directly through Doomtown Records, or you can also purchase it via Sorry State Rec. and Grave Mistake Rec., if you're from the States.

Also, Brat Pack are touring Europe once again. Make sure not to miss them if they're playing near your town. See the list od shows here.

Nitad - Den Gudomliga Varlden [2010]

This one was released last year on DE:NIHIL RECORDS and totally slays. It's not very different from their previous releases which is fine with me because NITAD are one of my favorite bands. Anyway, it's 4 ripping hardcore songs in just under 10 minutes with Gårzon being my favorite of the bunch. And the cover art is fucking fantastic.

You can buy the ep HERE.

KENT STATE

Kent State is the new music project of DEEP SLEEPs ( touring Europe right now! Go see them! ) guitarist Nicholas Vance. Unlike DS, Kent State takes it's influences from a completely different direction. The music is dense and filled with feedback noise with lots of reverb but it's catchy as hell. Nicholas calls it "psychedelic death pop" and I couldn't agree more on the description. This is a must have for GUIDED BY VOICES fans. And if you like all the noise pop bands that are popular nowadays you should check this out because it beats them by a mile.

For more info and news check the blog PARANOID FUTURES witch is run by Nicholas or follow Kent State on their FACEBOOK PAGE.

Since I didn't post anything for a long time I've decided to share with you this awesome record. Probably my favorite release this year so far. Shambling pub rock influenced punk. Five songs long and it clocks in just over six and a half minutes. Sweden delivers again. SNALLA, SNALLA!

They have a full length called
Det Här Är Inte New York out, also. You can read the MMR review HERE.

Arctic Flowers & Spectres

Portland's Arctic Flowers are totally into british anarcho post-punk and everything what was great about Corpus Christi collective, but yet, their songs seem incredibly fresh and not cliche. The band features punk veteran Stan (ex-Signal Lost) on guitar, Defect Defect's drummer and some crusties from Bog People \ Vivid Sekt. Demo was released sometime in 2010. and a few songs from these sessions were cut for a 7inch single. I think the band put this one out by themselves but I do know for sure you can get it from Feral Ward.

Also, there is a split 7inch with canadians Spectres out there. Spectres are also sharing passion for british anarcho punk as well as sometimes reinventing Warsaw \ Joy Division gloomy sounds. This split release is out on canadian Charged \ Distorted Rec. Beside this release, Spectres also did two other singles as well as the killer LP titled "Last Days" which is out on german Sabotage Rec. Oh, and there is a new Arctic Flowers release on a horizon. Hear one tune "Rising" here. This track reminds me of Signal Lost at their best moments. Can't wait to get this one on vinyl. :)

John Schooley And His One Man Band 7 Inches

Hello world! New guy here, AKA M.M.. I don't know shit about the hipster stuff M. usually posts, so I'm going with these two raw and wild rocking 7 inches from John Schooley. Nowdays, he is mostly known for his Dr. Ross influenced blues mixed with garage/punk stuff published for Voodoo Rhythm, but this is nothing like that. These two gems, released for Goner and Ball records, are so primitive and loud that they are, besides Hasil Adkins and Dead Elvis stuff, my favorite one man band records ever. Goner 7'' comes with one Billy Childish and one Rick Derringer cover, but Ball 7'' delivers two original tunes. Both records are out of print, but you can still try eBay .

Surf Nazis Must Die - Anti-everything EP [2003]

It's Easter, and what better way to celebrate it than by putting up some hardcore punk recordings for people to download?

So, we bring you Surf Nazis Must Die, the cult German teenage thrashers!

"Anti-everything", which happens to be of my favourite EP's of all time, contains 8 really short songs dealing with being angry, hating, being hated, being hated by girls, emo kids getting blown to shit... you know, the usual stuff teenage punx write songs about.

As for the music, expect hardcore punk that's fast but not too fast, sounds kinda sloppy but is actually well played, and a vocalist that sounds like an angry Eric Cartman.

I think this is completely sold out, so don't bother looking for a physical copy. But if you insist, try eBay.
Otherwise, download here.

Vogue - Dickfaced LP [2008]

Umm... yeah. Not much going on here at TL, but hey, why don't you try keeping this thing updated regularly? Posting stuff for download and writing about it is hard work.

So, this installment of Teenage Lobotomy brings you the "Dickfaced" LP by Vogue, but I'm sure you've already figured that out. Vogue hail from Belgium, the land of beer and chocolate, and play good ol' hardcore punk. What did you expect anyway?

To describe this record in a few words, it's mean-sounding hardcore punk featuring loads of odd time signatures, psychedelic moments and other cool shit you wouldn't expect, but rest assured - this thing rocks all the way. Oh, and the vocals are awesome too - the guy sounds like a dead-drunk Springa of SSD, or just your average violent alcoholic. Either way, this record slays!

Download this monster here.
Buy it at places such as Crucial Attack or Per Koro.
Up the punx!

J.

P.S.
Vogue have another 12'', "Pompshit", which was released last year and also rules, but I'll talk about it some other time.

Double Negative - Daydreamnation [2010]

Ahh, the first blog entry in a million years.
You probably thought we were dead or something, but no, we were just lazy.

So, what we have here is the sophomore album by Raleigh, NC's Double Negative. Legend has it that they had recorded the album, but then someone broke into their practice space and stole the portable 16-track the album was on. That didn't stop them though - they recorded the whole thing all over again and punk won!

To quote the Revelation Records webstore, these guys play "raw, Void and early COC-influenced hardcore punk", and I'd say that's a good description. Now, if you're into hardcore punk, you might notice that the riffs sound familiar and you've heard them all before, but they're played in a fresh and very unique manner, so you could still call this pretty original. Besides, it's not like you hear bands that play "raw, Void and early COC-influenced hardcore punk" every day. Great stuff.

Download these 13 hardcore punk rippers here... or even better, buy the record from the good people of Sorry State Records.

The Energy - The Energy's First Album [2010]

Houston's The Energy share members with No Talk, The Secret Prostitutes, Bloody Hammer, Black Congress and a bunch of other talented bands from all over Texas. The new Autistic Youth record and this one are probably my fav full-lengths of the year 2010.

The Energy are quite unique at what they do and they are everything but yet another generic and predictable rocknroll band. First, most of the songs on The Energy's First Record are over four and a half minutes long and Stabbing In The Dark goes on for more than eight minutes. The songs structures are repetitive but always fueled with sonic & riff-heavy garage punk rock parts which are written intelligently, and I'm not saying that in a pretentious way. Repetitive riffs are always accompanied with background noise & feedback, killer solos and melodies which reflect the psychedelic side of the 60's and 70's garage rock, and you can even hear some glam rock influences (Girls Don't Like Me At All).

The effects of strange and weird are the main thing that makes The Energy great and that factor is provided by Bates' (he calls himself Wicked Poseur) vocals, which are flat and repetitive (don't give a shit vocals?) and accompanied by lyrics that sound like they were copied from the diary of a serial killer. The Energy's First Record has this drugged up psychedelic vibe. It's like lurking into someone elses bad trip, but to you, his worst nightmares are a whole lotta fun. But you must be careful, 'cause The Energy's First Record is a so convincingly dangerous & dark piece of punk rock it might make you go ape crazy, unleash the evil in your paranoid mind, make you wanna stab your neighbour in the dark, chop his legs off and store them in your fridge for a couple of days. Or at least Wicked Poseur wants you to think about doing stuff like that while listening to his loser punk group.

This is released via Team Science. 3rd press is out right now so go get  it here.

Steve Adamyk Band Singles

I was really into this band when Steve send me the songs from the first three singles but i couldn't find the time to post them here, so sorries go to Steve for the delay.

Steve Adamyk Band are 3/4 members of now defunct Sedatives playing songs Steve Adamyk wrote solo while he was in Sedatives. This is some pretty fast and neat three-chord powerpop punk backed up with plenty of energy and hooks that are so catchy & sweet you'll end up desperately wanting for more songs after you repeat these a few times in a row. What this band is doing reminds me a lot of melodic side of 77 style of british punk (Pointed Sticks, Buzzcocks, The Real Kids, Undertones) and some newer bands who are or were into this sound (Exploding Hearts, Sonic Avenues, latest Jay Reatard solo stuff). As we speak there's also a full-length out on german P Trash.

Also, Steve did a interview for Exclaim magazine and you can read more about his amazing band there.

Steve Adamyk Band - Speed It Up 7'' (2010) - Buy at P Trash Rec.

Blank Stare - Self-titled LP [2008]

When I walk the streets at night, I usually listen to Blank Stare. Why, you may ask. I'll tell you why - the city I call home is full of dumbass violent thugs who've got nothing better to do than harass and beat up nice and handsome guys like me. For some strange reason, the overall pissed off-ness (is that even a valid phrase?) of this record rubs off on me and makes me bold enough to tell those assholes to fuck off, but I digress. Anyway, Blank Stare were a hardcore punk band out of Boston, and a great one. Actually, one of the best bands of the last decade, I dare say. Unfortunately, life sucks and the band is no more, but this record is just too damn good to go unmentioned here at Teenage Lobotomy.

Guess I have to say something about the actual music, eh? See that guy on the cover, shooting at the world from his window? Well, that's exactly what this record sounds like, if you know what I mean. No?
I thought so. Basically, what you will find recorded on this album is 9 songs of pure fuckin' hate plus a Last Rights cover. The riffs are tight, the drummer's a maniac and the vocalist sure does sound pissed, which is pretty much awesome! Another thing I like about this record are the lyrics - smart and to the point, but never getting too naive or direct, and that's a pleasant surprise, coming from a sXe band.

Speaking of which, I'm sick and tired of all these "modern" sXe hardcore bands with "deep", "personal" and "inspirational" lyrics that trendy hardcore hipsters usually quote on their Tumblr pages - the lyrics are just pathetic and the bands suck balls. On the other hand, Blank Stare keep things real and therefore do not suck balls.

Yeah, whatever. Enjoy this record here.
Spend money on it at Third Party or Refuse Records.

J.

P.S.
Some Blank Stare members are currently in Social Circkle, Confines and Positive Reinforcement, so check those bands out!

Night Birds Singles & Demo

Night Birds are my favourite new band featuring Ergs members. Well, i must say Psyched to Die are pretty rad too but NB somehow manage to take the best from the OC hardcore punk (Adolescents, D.I., Agent Orange) and spice that sound with a surf rock touch and maybe with a little bit of early NOFX and some JFA & DK feel. All singles plus demo are total fucking killers. Latest single titled Midnight Movies is not out yet but you can preorder your copy via No Way Records. There's also a limited tape version of Midnight Movies which is probably sold out (try to get the tape directly from the Ergs website here) but is floating arround the interwebs and you can hear it here at this great blog.

Night Birds - Demo (2009)
Night Birds - Selftitled 7" (2010) Buy it here at Grave Mistake Rec.
Night Birds - Killer Waves (2010) This was out on Art of Underground but unfortunately it's all gone.

Confines - Withdrawn 7'' [2010]

Hi, my name is J. and I'm the new guy at Teenage Lobotomy.
M. and L. had a hard time updating this thing regularly, so they called in for reinforcements and here I am! Anyway, I'll start off my career by posting a fine 7'' by Confines.

In short, Confines are a hardcore fuckin' punk band straight outta Massachusetts and this record rules! No wonder, having in mind that members of Confines are or were in other rad bands such as Social Circkle, Cut the Shit and Blank Stare. As for the music, it sounds the way hardcore punk should - raw, ugly and so pissed off it makes you wanna punch holes in the wall. Works for me.

Anyway, go and get this record - that's an order!

Download it here.
Buy it at Side Two or Labor of Love.
